Underground utility mapping using GPR technology for NHSRCL

Summary:

A pilot study of GPR survey was carried out at Kalupur railway station along the proposed alignment of high-speed train. The scope of the project includes the mapping of specific locations around the proposed pier locations of bullet train using Ground Penetrating Radar technology to locate possible underground cables, up-to the depth of around 2-3 m. Considering the client's requirements and the expected depth of the utilities, the area has been surveyed using 900 MHz and 400 MHz frequency antenna mounted with SIR 3000 GPR system to cover the depth up-to 2-3 m with fair resolution. The GPR survey was carried out at proposed five sites, in and around Kalupur railway station, Ahmedabad. The purpose of the project was to map all the underground cables in order to prevent the damage to the same during the construction of piers or to plan the shifting of the same. Number of trial trenches had been excavated for the purpose of verification of findings of GPR survey, with the permission from Indian Railways, Ahmedabad along with the presence of NHSRCL representatives. It is observed that findings of the trail trenches agreed accurately with the outout results of the GPR survey. Hence, it is inferred that GPR can be effectively implemented for the mapping of underground cables along the proposed high speed rail alignment.
