Archaeological Inspection for the Redevelopment of Jaggannath Puri Temple at Puri

GPR investigation to map underground artifacts up to depth of 5 m.

Summary:
This study attempted to explore the potential locations containing any buried archaeological features corresponding to different era’s up to the depth of around 5 m using the non- destructive technology, Ground Penetrating Radar. The region up to 75-metre radius of Meghanad Prachira (outer compound wall) of Shree Jagannath Temple, Puri. Objective of this GPR survey is to locate buried archaeological structure related to historical buildings or ascertain other remnants of previous ages were present in the area. The output results of this study helped to plan and optimize the further excavation at specific locations as this can minimize the risk of damaging an artefact or structure of archaeological importance.
Based on the inputs from the relevant sources, available studies and information about the existing features, the depth of exploration is expected to be a maximum of 5 m, therefore the survey has been executed using 200 MHz antenna to cover the expected depth with a fair resolution
